Cutting good joinery depends on your ability to make straight, accurate cuts per the layout lines that either you or another have marked on the material. The Japanese saw, chiefly characterized by its cutting on the pull stroke, is highly accurate for a variety of woodworking tasks and a pleasure to use. Training the hand and body with a hand saw will naturally lead into executing the same cuts with a power saw. To efficiently cut large joinery on timber projects power tools are as much a part of a Japanese carpenter’s tool kit as the traditional chisel and saw. In this workshop we will learn proper sawing techniques, understanding basic layout, and cutting to a line. This will be practiced with both hand and power tools while making lap joints.
