Colorado Timber Framing Fundamentals (Dates Tentative)

For those local to the Boulder, Colorado area, come learn the fundamental skills required to cut a timber frame. This workshop focuses on chisel selection, set-up, sharpening, and cutting of the mortise and tenon and housed dovetail joint. Applicable to both beginners and professional carpenters alike. We will review techniques for using power tools to speed up joinery cutting. Students will engage in intense practice to quickly refine their abilities.


Topics Covered

  • Setting up and sharpening a Japanese chisel

  • Understanding timber frame layout marking and the principles of cutting joinery

  • Basic handsaw instruction

  • Cutting a basic mortise and tenon and housed dovetail joint.

  • Use of the handsaw, power saw, drill and chisel to chop a mortise and cut a tenon.

  • Joinery time trials.

Practice Materials - Students will be provided with all the practice materials they will need for the workshop.

None, come as you are!

Required Tools

The following tools are required to get the most out of your experience. A loner may be available but not guaranteed. A curated kit of premium Japanese tools will be available for purchase at checkout.

  • 1000 Grit Water Stone

  • 6000 Grit Water Stone

  • Diamond Flattening Plate

  • 240-270mm Ryoba Saw (Japanese Pull Saw)

  • 18-24mm Japanese Chisel (Brand new, unused, Tataki/Timber or Oire/Bench preferred)

  • Japanese Hammer (350-500g)

  • 150 or 300mm Sashigane / Square
