Our 2024 Timber Frame Workshop was a resounding success, in 6 days an awesome team of 25 woodworkers with a broad range of experience cut and raised a huge timber frame to shelter the saw mill. Yet while speaking with guests at our Maine Japanese Woodworking Festival and similar events, I kept hearing similar requests: timber framing for a small structure.
We want to provide the training and skills to empower you to build a useful structure, on your property, that is both affordable, aesthetically pleasing, and inline with a timeless way of building. Whether you desire a greenhouse, wood shed, chicken coup, or garden shed, Japanese timber framing techniques will allow you to make something of which you can be proud.
About the Building
During this six day workshop, students will learn to cut and raise a simple garden shed frame that employs traditional Japanese timber framing techniques. An enclosed area to store the various items for the garden and yard, and a sheltered, open area for the mower. A flexible structure that could easily be versioned into a greenhouse with changes to the roof, or a chicken coup with changes to the walls.
This workshop will be somewhat more relaxed than the larger Summer Timber Frame Workshop. We will focus not only on the technical skills of building and raising a frame, but the design decisions that would allow you to re-imagine the structure for your own use.
About the Workshop
The best way to learn these skills is by doing them on a real project. The project provides context and answers many of the “why?” questions that arise when you cut practice joinery in isolation. A typical schedule begins with a group breakfast, a morning instruction session and demonstration. Then follows morning work, lunch, and afternoon work. We’ll end the day with a group dinner and discussion. As students complete their assigned joints they’ll be rotated to other joints, finishing or assembly. At the end of the workshop we will raise the structure and celebrate our group success.
