Yann Giguère: Hands-On Scribing a Post to Stone

  • Never Stop Building LLC 772 Rome Road Mercer, ME, 04957 United States (map)

In traditional Japanese carpentry most structural posts rest on a foundation stone. In this workshop we will explore the ways one would connect post and stone. The central technique covered is how to carve to fit the base of the post to the contours of the foundation stone. The morning will be filled with demonstrations, discussion of proportions along with applications and of course a lot of hands on practice! The practice time will focus on scribing/carving to/fitting a square or natural round post to a stone. You will take away a firm grasp of this important skill in the context of Japanese carpentry.
